About Klippel–Trénaunay Syndrome (KTS):

Shortly after birth, Shelby was diagnosed with Klippel–Trénaunay Syndrome (KTS). KTS is a rare congenital disorder without a known cause or cure. It involves problems with capillary and venous malformations, and limb overgrowth. In Shelby’s case, the right side of her body presented with a port-wine stain, twisted and swollen veins in her legs, and a much thicker appearance than her left side. Doctors at Boston’s Children’s Hospital Vascular Anomalies Center are currently conducting research on more effective treatments for vascular malformations and maybe one day preventing KTS.   About Shelby Shines On Foundation: Shortly following Shelby's passing, her family and friends sought to honor Shelby’s memory.  In January 2025, they launched the Shelby Shines On Foundation, dedicated to spreading Shelby’s remarkable spirit of love and compassion. Shelby's heart was filled with kindness and generosity, inspiring the foundation to continue her loving spirit, and her ability to uplift the community and motivate others, just as she did throughout her life.  Numerous people remarked that Shelby lived a remarkably full, rounded life. Emboldened by Shelby’s experiences, the foundation is dedicated to facilitating enriching experiences for individuals with special needs. Shelby found a friend everywhere she went. Because of this, the foundation wants to help further the educational experiences of a senior who exemplifies inclusion of peers with special needs. Finally, Shelby Shines On Foundation will donate to advance research and awareness for Klippel-Trénaunay Syndrome. We look forward to honoring Shelby’s memory and furthering her legacy.

Meet
   Shelby

On September 7, 2002, “Baby B” burst into this world as Shelby Faith McWaters, only one minute behind her sister.

From the minute Shelby entered this world, everyone knew she possessed a radiating joy which made her stand out. Then, very early in life it was evident that she was a people person who loved big and possessed a gentle confidence. Shelby was a lifelong member of Mansfield Baptist Church. One of her favorite events was Operation Christmas Child with Girls in Action. Finding the gifts then stuffing the boxes made her heart smile. She attended Covington Academy where she was in the Builders Club, Drama Club, played on the golf team, and was the football manager. After graduating with honors, Shelby established her cottage bakery, Shelby's Sugar Shack, creating treats and sharing her love. Shelby's life was always vibrant, but she truly thrived when the family moved closer to the Covington Square, unlocking a new chapter of growth and fulfillment. She loved riding her golf cart around The Square and got so much enjoyment from her job at The Soap Box. She could frequently be found chatting everyone up at City Pharmacy or attending a classic car show on The Square. With a gift for connecting with others, Shelby's infectious smile and inclusive nature captivated the hearts of everyone she met. People were drawn to her and followed her pure influence and love for life. Her unwavering authenticity and enthusiasm inspired all who knew her to live boldly and love loudly. Sadly, on December 13, 2024, Shelby passed away at the age of 22 after suffering a stroke five days earlier.
